About this course
This 5-week introductory class covers fundamental ceramic hand building techniques including pinch pots, coil building, slab building, texturing, and glazing. Students will come away with a solid foundation in working with clay. Week 1: Pinch Pots Learn the fundamentals of working with clay, beginning with the essential technique of pinching clay into shape by using thumb and fingers. Practice making pinch pots of various sizes, and create a cup or other vessel to continue working on in week 2. Week 2: Coil Building Learn to form vessels using clay coils. Practice building small and large objects. Learn to form handles and attach them to your pinch pots from week 1. Week 3: Slab Building & Texturing Learn basic slab building techniques and use slump molds to create larger bowls and plates. Use tools and natural materials to add texture to your work. Week 4: Final Workshop This week will be free studio time to practice and explore the hand building techniques learned so far, working with supervision to create and finish more refined pieces you plan to glaze and fire. Final pieces will be bisque fired before the final session. Week 5: Glazing This week is all about glazing. You will learn the basics of applying glaze and will spend the class glazing all the pieces you made. They will be fired and ready for pick up in 1 week. Note: All students are required to clean all work areas used 15 minutes before the class ends. Course fee includes: 25 lbs of clay 5 weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction Use of studio tools Firing for pieces made during class Glazes This class is intended for ages 18+. Ages 14-17 are welcome if parent and teen both register for the class. Aprons will be provided, but please wear clothing you don't mind getting clay and/or glaze on.
